At gengive ordrer og forespørgsler

Når vi vil gengive en ordre eller forespørgsel, kan vi bruge et udsagnsord som 'tell' med en sætning med to: He told me to go away. Mønstret er udsagnsord + hensynsled + sætning med to. Hensynsleddet er den person, som der bliver talt til. Andre udsagnsord der bruges til at gengive ordrer og forespørgsler på denne måde er: command, order, warn, ask, advise, invite, beg, teach, & forbid.

Forespørgsler om ting

Forspørgsler om ting gengives ved at bruge mønstret "asked for" + genstandsled.

Forslag

Forslag gengives ofte ved at bruger udsagnsordene suggest, insist, recommend, demand, request og propose efterfulgt af en that-sætning. 'That' og 'should' er valgfrie i disse sætninger, som vist i de første to eksempler herunder. Bemærk, at suggest, recommend og propose også kan blive efterfulgt af en lang tillægsform for at eliminere hensynsleddet (modtageren af forslaget) og dermed gøre forslaget mere høfligt. Denne brug af den lange tillægsform er illustreret i eksempel fire og fem herunder.
